I've been tagged
I don't normally like these but I do love books :) Thanks Lisa
Here is how it works
Open the book closest to you, not your favorite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, to page 56.Write out the fifth sentence, as well as two to five sentences following there.

The book closest to me right now is The Bartimaeus Trilogy. Book Three "Ptolemy's Gate"
"What was that demon you were asking about the other day?"
"Bartimaeus, sir."
"yes that's it. Trismegistus has a reference to him, in one of his tables of Antique Dijinn. Somewhere in the appendices, you'll find.
"oh, really, sir? That's great. Thank you."
"Gives a little of his summoning history. Brief. You won't find it terribly interesting.
" No, sir. I very much doubt it." She held out a hand. "Do you mind if I take a look?"

Week of Colour-Multi Colours
We are a pretty creative bunch in our family. We love art of all kinds and you can always find crayons on the floor, painted pictures drying on the counter and someone drawing in their sketch book. I have a pretty big pantry full of art supplies for the kids to use whenever the mood strikes.

And this last picture is one of my favourite holiday treats!!
A pumpkin spice latte from Star Bucks! Yum!!!!

Week of Colour-Pink
Of course when I think pink I think Gabbi. Pink is her colour. She is gorgeous in pink (well in every colour really). I want to learn better how to use the natural light in my home to take pictures. So this morning I set up a "studio" on my bed by hanging a sheet from the ceiling for a background and using only the natural morning light from my window. I gave Gabbi some props to keep her still.

A Week of Colour
I am going to post this week about colour. The trees have all lost their leaves outside so it will be nice for me to try and find some colour in other places. If you want to join in please let me know so I can check out your blog.

Dinner and a movie
Every Friday night is movie night here. I usually make a special dinner and dessert and we rent a movie and the boys get to stay up late. It is one of our most favourite things. Last night I made Thai Beef Soup (it was sooo good!)
Chocolate chip cookies for dessert (rolled in cinnamon sugar)
And let us not forget the all important air popped popcorn topped with sea salt and melted butter.

Comfort

With the weather getting cooler I find I am craving comfort foods. This pumpkin loaf fits the bill perfectly.

Pumpkin Loaf: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, plus more for pan 2 1/2 cups whole wheat or spelt flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 3/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/8 teaspoon each allspice and cloves 2 large eggs 1 cup sugar 1 can (15 ounces) solid-pack pumpkin puree 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup walnut pieces Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter loaf pan. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, butter, and pumpkin puree until combined. Add dry ingredients to pumpkin mixture, and mix gently until smooth add in walnuts and pumpkin seeds. 3. Turn batter into prepared loaf pan, and smooth top. I like to sprinkle a few pumpkin seeds on top too. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached, 65 to 70 minutes (if it starts to brown too quickly then tent the top with tin foil. Cool cake 10 minutes in pan, then turn out of pan, and cool completely, right side up, on a rack.

Happy Birthday Little Man!

Zander is 5 today!! I can't believe it, where has the time gone? 5 years ago was the last time I was pregnant!! Seems weird to say that since I have a 2 year old daughter but adoption is a different kind of pregnancy.

This picture was taken at my blessingway. The woman putting Henna on my belly was one of my doula's.
Remembering his birth: I woke up around 3:00am that night with mild contractions. They were strong enough to keep me from sleep, so I went downstairs to check my email. As I surfed around I noticed my contractions were getting much stronger so I woke Mike up. We both sat on the couch and talked and breathed for about an hour. At around 5:00am I decided it was time to call my doulas and my midwives and my parents. Everyone arrived just as Ryan and Jayden woke up. The great thing about home birth is it feels so normal. Just like any other day. About 2 hours before Zander was born I was making toast with my doula in the kitchen. The contractions started to get really intense so I got into a warm tub and that helped so much. In fact I laboured there until Zander was ready to be born. Then I got into my bed (the same bed Jayden was born in 2 years earlier) and he was born. When I think of all the feelings I had as they placed his warm baby body on my belly I still well up with tears. It's a very powerful experience. I enjoyed his birth so much!!! I was surrounded by love and that makes all the difference. My midwife was great and my doulas were great and of course Mike is a rock for me. When my doulas first got to my house they called all my friends who each lit a candle for me while I laboured. I also had candles lit in my room and I could feel each and every one of those woman in the room with me.
Zander was a big baby weighing in at 11 pounds but his birth was by far the easiest and most enjoyable.

Very soon after Zander was born I noticed that something was wrong with his left eye. I spent the first two weeks of his life terrified. The doctors didn't know that was wrong with him, but I went from doctor to doctor with scary words like "tumor" being thrown around. When I finally landed at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital they were able to diagnose him with Microphthalmia. It's horrible to watch your baby go through painful tests. It causes you real physical pain. We spend the first year of Zanders life in and out of the Sick Kids Hospital, but in the end he was fine and it turns out to be not as serious as they led me to believe. He is completely blind in his left eye but you would never know it. He is an amazing little guy. He has proven all the doctors wrong! This is one of my favourite pictures of Zander and I. He is about 9 months old here.

New Scarf
I started knitting this scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts on Friday. I finished it last night. I used Alpaca wool which is quickly becoming my favourite wool. I am starting a blanket for Gabbi with this wool.

Don't mind my bathroom, it's under renovations. Today it's very cool out so after our walk I am coming home to bake.

Weekend stuff and Christmas creeping in
Mike surprised me with the gorgeous snow globe this weekend. He knows how much I LOVE birds!

And I had to let a little more Christmas creep in. I pulled out my wooden reindeer.

Seriously cute outfit I bought for Gabbi on Friday from Old Navy

A little project I have been knitting this weekend

We had a friend stop by on Saturday evening and I taught her how to knit. She learned very fast and knit this up. I told her she should put it in her scrap book.

Late autumn at the beach

We spent the morning at the beach. It was probably the last really warm day for quite a while and we wanted to soak it up.

Worms eye view of the autumn colours.

TypePad
I just signed up for a 14 day free trial over at TypePad. I have been thinking about this for a while because I really am not a fan of blogger. I am also going to be going back to public because I have 100 readers and I have 5 people who have requested to read my blog. As some of you know when you go private you can only have 100 readers.. which I do not understand why???? But anyways I am going to be using Typepad for the next 14 days at least so please head on over and join me. It's a work in progress.

 Trick or Treat

 And we're done :)

The weather last night could not have been more perfect. It was warm and breezy. Gabbi was really into the trick or treating this year. She liked going up the doors and holding out her hands for candy. But I could not convince her to put it into a bag. She wanted to hold onto the shiny wrapped goody. I found her chewing right through the wrapper to get at the chocolate :)
The boys awoke this morning to presents from the Sugar Sprite. They leave out all their candy (except for the 10 pieces they got to choose and keep for themselves), and the Sugar Sprite comes while they are asleep and takes it and leaves them a present to say thank you.
I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!

Taking a moment for myself
This afternoon when Gabbi was down for her nap, I put a movie on for Ryan and Zander and told them that mommy wanted to be by herself for a little while. I told them I would appreciate it if they would quietly watch the movie. And they did :) I sat in my bedroom with my kitties warming my legs. I had a cup of tea and finished "The Secret Life of Bees". What a great book by the way.

After my quiet time I made some pumpkin scones. I found the Starbucks recipe here and they are SOOOOO good :)

The festivities begin!
Today we hollowed out our pumpkin and roasted the seeds.. yum!!! I also bought the boys their presents from the Sugar Sprite today. Tonight when Mike gets home we will carve our pumpkin (he is MUCH better at this then I am). We love Halloween :)

It's that time of year again
When I get the urge to knit. I don't think I have ever finished a knitted project. I have started lots though. On Saturday we watched The Golden Compass again and I fell in love with Lyra's little outfits. Especially this hat

I remembered Grace had posted a link to the pattern last year on her blog. So I figured I would give it go. I had my grandmother and mom help me and it turned out a little small for Gabbi so I have started a new one and this one I plan on finishing myself :)
I have to give credit to Ryan for taking this great picture of me knitting.
I think I need to find a new place to keep my yarn (away from kitties)
I love using Bamboo Needles when I knit
 Alpaca Wool

Once I figure out how to do a 3 needle bind off then Gabbi's second hat will be done. Youtube is great for learning techniques if you cannot follow written instructions like myself.

Cozy
We got a new fireplace for the livingroom. It's an electric because we are in a condo and can't have a vented fireplace but it makes the room feel very cozy :)
