Now that you are a family the last thing you want to think about is more paperwork! But this one is important.

You need to apply for the child’s social security number as soon as possible. Do this now while you are still thinking about it! If you have the child’s social security number it is easy to apply for any tax benefits. You will also need a social security number when applying for savings accounts for the child.

You can apply for the adopted child a Social Security number without the updated birth certificate, but you may want to wait. Then, you can apply for the number using your child’s new name, with your name as parent. Your Adoption decree may be needed to file.

You will need to apply in person with the following information:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and
Show us original documents proving your child’s:
- U.S. citizenship;
- Age; and
- Identity.
Show us documents proving your identity.
