Things To Expect During A Homestudy

Although every homestudy varies from agency-to-agency or state-to-state. There are a few things you that are universal, and can be expected during your homestudy process. You can expect to meet one on one with a licensed social worker who specializes in adoption. You can also expect to have a home visit with this social worker. You can expect a background check; income verification, references, and a health check.

Process

It is normal to feel stress and anxiety throughout your home study process. You are being looked at as potential parents, this is stressful. Remember to trust yourself and your instincts on where you will be a good parent. If you have concerns now is the time to address them. If there are no concerns, relax and enjoy the process of becoming a parent.

What you can take away from process

One of the main objective of the homestudy is to help you be a good parent/s. Your Social Worker has specialized in the field of adoption and can offer parenting strategies and preparation for parenting an adopted child. They are a great resource of knowlege and welcome questions about adoption and parenting an adoptive child. Some ideas for gaining from your homestudy are:
  • A list of suggested books
  • Information on adoptive groups in your area
  • Suggestions on how to deal with adoption throughout the child’s life

Some things to consider before your homevisit
  • You have a working fire alarm
  • Analyze hazards around house and have a plan to fix these items.
  • Check temperature of hot water heater
