  • Adoptee
A person that has been adopted.

  • Adoptese
Those who have been separated by adoption.

  • Closed Adoption
The process of adoption which does not allow for any contact or identifying information between original family and the adoptive family or the adoptee. Closed adoption is practiced mostly in the North American Continent. Most other countries have open adoption or at least a means of giving identifying information between the parties when the adoptee reaches the age of majority.

  • Dossier
Collection of required paperwork submitted for adoption of a child.

  •  Gotcha Day
Day to celebrate adoption

  • Heritage
Something handed down from one's ancestors or the past, as a characteristic, a culture, tradition, etc.

  • Home Study
The process of having a social worker confirming a families ability to adopt. This usually includes interviews, a home vist and reference letters.

  • National Adoption Awareness Month
Each year, November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month. Celebrated since 1990 to promote adoption through the country.

  • Open Adoption
The relationship between birth parents and adoptive parents and child. These relationships vary from situation to situation. Ranges from exchange of information to visits between the two parties involved.
